BN lawmakers given honorary Rela ranks

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has conferred 122 Barisan Nasional lawmakers with honorary Rela ranks on Wednesday night.

This is to recognise the Parliamentarians’ contributions to the rakyat through the Rela platform.

Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said with honorary ranks in Rela, Parliamentarians could mobilise efforts together with ordinary members to implement Government policies and programmes such as the National Blue Ocean Strategy and outreach programmes.

He said Parliamentarians were now empowered to mobilise Rela members to assist during national disasters, traffic patrols during festive seasons, crime prevention monitoring activities and to assist border patrols with other relevant authorities at their respective constituencies.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said the Government was in the midst of amending the Rela Act to give members additional powers.

He also urged Parliamentarians to allocate funds to help Rela members purchase uniforms.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said Sabah and Sarawak had pledged RM6mil and RM18mil respectively for this purpose.

Among the Barisan lawmakers who received the honorary ranks are Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, Plantation Industries And Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Mary Yap.
